Anita Kwiatkowska-Naqvi

Anita Kwiatkowska-Naqvi is a Psychology graduate from Warsaw University and an animation graduate and PhD student at Lodz Film School. She uses stop motion animation with unconventional materials. The short film I was assigned is Ab Ovo (2013).

Her most recent work is Momo i Lulu (2024). Momo i Lulu is a somewhat tragic love at first sight story that takes place underwater.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

The title that I chose is, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004). The Lead Animator was Benjamin Goldman.

The reason that I chose Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, is because it is one of my all time favorite movies from when I was a child, and still is to this day (I also like the Netflix series). I remember watching it every halloween and whenever I had finished one of the books.

As for inspirations for Benjamin Goldman, I couldn’t find anything besides the fact that he was always intrigued by the magic of stop-motion ever since he was young, leading him to create Paper Ocean Pictures. His company has done other opening titles and ads for The History Channel and A&E. he has also done some digital shorts. one of which is Summer Love.

Honami Yano

The Impressionistic, Pointillism Animation of Honami Yano | Spoon & Tamago

Honami Yano is an independent animator from japan, during her college years she studied under Koji Yamamura and created one of her short films called “Chromosome Sweetheart” (2017) for her final project. She has made another short film called “A Bite of Bone” (2021) and there is an upcoming one temporary called “Eri”.

Chromosome Sweetheart - Honami Yano

Her work is all hand drawn, in “A Bite of Bone”, she mainly used a technique of hand doting the colors, making the animation unique. her works have won many awards, including the grand prize for short animation from the 45th Ottawa international animation festival.

it’s hard to find an article on Honami Yano or her work, but from looking through her website i can see how she’s very passionate with the topics that she chooses to animate, “A Bite of Bone” is an autobiographical short based of the story from the director, as well as showing off a small tradition of eating the cremated remains of a loved one. Her other short, “Chromosome Sweetheart” is based off her image of how chromosomes looked like people wriggling, and she also put in queer imagery to help her with her queer identity.

One of the anime series that inspires me is Bocchi the Rock!, it’s a comedy music anime with some very funny scenes, one of my favorites is when the show suddenly becomes poorly 3D animated

The anime is about a girl who wants to be a rockstar, yet she has a small problem….she’s extremely socially awkward, but with the help of her new friends, she’s slowly getting more confident performing on stage!

FEAR

Kali The Little Vampire is an animated short by Regina Pessoa. In classic vampire fashion, Kali can’t be in the sunlight, yet they yearn to be. The fear portion of this short is a classic monster, the vampire. Pessoa has also worked on another film, Tragic Story With a Happy Ending. Her animation style contains a lot of sharp lines, that make up smooth objects, almost like a hand-drawn animation in pen.

My two favorite horror-tinged animated movies/shows would have to be Coraline and Crashbox. Coraline has been a childhood movie of mine, although it scared me back then, I still love it.

On the other hand, Crashbox wasn’t intended to be a horror-tinged show, in reality, it was supposed to be for pre-schoolers, pretty crazy if you ask me. It was all harmless but when it came to Mr. Revolting Slob, I was terrified.

Cartoon Modern

in both of my examples, the animation was hand drawn and colored. the fist one is about a girl trying to get the boy to lover her. while the second one is about a man going on a journey and happens to fall in love.

UPA cartoon Modern

animators:

Bill Melendez

Willie Pyle

Paul Smith

Pat Matthews

Pete Burness

Not Cartoon Modern

animators: (from what i can find)

Andreas Deja, supervising animator

Eric Goldberg, Philoctetes

Nik Ranieri, Hades

The differences between the two is the story, the animation style, and who made them.

The similarities between the two is how they are both hand drawn, has a theme of falling in love, and a quest to get that love.
