Animation Documentary: The Ballad of Big Al

The documentary I chose is The Ballad of Big Al from the BBC network, which talks about an allosaurus and his life on Earth. the documentary is based on the skeleton fossil of Big Al. I think that the documentary fits in supporting ideas and facts and possibly a recreation of reported events. although we weren’t alive when dinosaurs were, we have a lot of knowledge of how they lived.

The animation was made by Impossible Pictures and produced by BBC Studios Science Unit, Discovery Channel, ProSieben, and TV Asahi.

Impossible Pictures, founded by Tim Haines, is a London-based animation Studio that works with CGI. They have two other locations, 360production up in Derry, Ireland, and Firestep which works out of Manchester. They mostly work on documentary series like, Walking With Dinosaurs, Walking With Beasts, and Space Odyssey.

Music and Animation

The music video I chose is from the Rhythm game, Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA. While there are many different versions of the game, the specific game i pulled from is Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F. All the music videos are played in the background of the game.

I chose one of my favorite songs, “The MMORPG Addicts Anthem”.

The animation studio who did most of the animating for this game is Marza Animation Planet, a japanese based animation studio who also is under video game company, SEGA. Founded in 2005, they do CGI for SEGA video games and some movies, notably the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

They collaborated with Crypton Future Media, the creators of the Vocaloid software that helps make the songs in the games, the songs in the games are made by composers who used the software to make them. In order to make the music videos they start with a motion capture of a person dancing, and they CGI on top of said motion capture. The choreographer for the game would listen to the song and then make a dance to go with it, then send it to the dancer and then the dancer would send it to the animation studio.

I think that the animation studio has impacted a lot of people, they had let open the gates for people who never animated before, to try out 3D/CGI animation. I also find it unique how they use motion capture as a base for their animation.

This is important to me because its been a huge impact of my life from the music, all the way to the art and fanbase.

Hand of The Artist

For both indexical and “the illusion of life”, I chose the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit? This movie fits in indexical and illusions of life by incorporating live action and animation into one, and having fluid motions with the animated characters. I think that the goal for making animation look realistic in the real world played out really well.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is a movie about Roger Rabbit trying to get information on a scandal that involved his wife, Jessica Rabbit. But when Jessica’s affair partner is found dead, people pointed to Roger being the main suspect.

The animation was done by Richard Williams, and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

For the hand of the artist i chose Fantastic Mr. Fox, directed by Wes Anderson. I think that this movie fits in this category because of how all the puppets are made of fur and cloth, and you can easily see that they sometimes move through out the entire movie, no frames are the same.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a movie about a fox who steals from the farmers around the area, but that causes everyone he knows, and himself, to be hunted down by said farmers.

The animation was done by 3 Mills Studios, with puppets made by Mackinnon & Saunders
