Sherlock Hound

Sherlock Hound is an animated adaptation of the hip and cool and super awesome Detective stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring Detective Sherlock Holmes and his homo-erotic platonic roommate and ‘intimate friend and companion’, John Watson. This is one of the several adaptations where Sherlock is featured as an animal other than a human, my favorite of which being Great Mouse Detective (which is an Adaptation of an Adaptation, Basil of Baker Street), where he is featured as a mouse, or a more recent adaptation, Catlock, which pretty much no one besides me and maybe 4 other people might have seen because it was shared ‘exclusively’ to us and made me want to tear my eyes out.

The point being, Sherlock Holmes is a famous character, so the audience is already Built-in for the show’s creators. (which if you recognize this production, you will know it was made by Studio Ghibli.) Though the series is overall fun and visually beautiful like most of their works, it didn’t have a long run period, airing only from November 1984 to May 1985.

Though it was Sherlock and Watson adapted from the original stories (as well as everyone’s favorite, Ms Hudson, and the later-to-be-twinkified by the woke mob; Professor Moriarty)- the episodes and stories were unique. No longer was Sherlock mainly solving murder, but now he was mostly solving robberies. However, this separation didn’t seem to deter audiences, and the series is held to a pretty high regard. Especially amongst hardcorde Anime-Holmes fans and Holmes enthusiasts who kinda like sherlock no matter what he is in. (especially some of those people who love that version of sherlock called Herlock Sholmes, who I admit I find insufferable)

Personally, I haven’t seen enough of the series to form a solid opinion on if I like it or not. It just doesn’t appeal to me in the way that other Holmes media does. And for the people it does appeal to- it works really well! The series actually was never officially canceled, but rather was suspended from production after Miyazaki moved on to other projects and licensing for the Sherlock Holmes character was getting dicey with production. (Don’t worry guys, if you are thinking ‘oh no! how will I ever create a gay romance adaptation on twitter dot com about these characters if they are copyrighted!’ then don’t worry any more! Sherlock Holmes is proudly in the public domain.)

But if you were thinking “Oh no! Romie! But where can I watch Clips of this show! Preferably out of context and in a manner where I really don’t know what is going on!” then don’t worry because now I got you covered.

SHABAM!

But when it comes to adaptations, I am a sucker for Sherlock adaptations. When writing this, I was specifically thinking of writing about an animated Sherlock adaptation. Some of my favorite adaptations of all time are Sherlock adaptations! But I will admit, some of my least favorite are also Sherlock adaptations.

anyways here are my sources.

Animation Adaptations- CLH

The adaptation I chose is a show available on Netflix called Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix!!!

It’s a really crazy show with a sort of futuristic corrupt government world and it ties into the adaptation because it’s a mashup of old Ubisoft characters from a lot of different games. A few worth noting are Assassin’s Creed, Rayman, and Splinter Cell. A lot of these characters are repurposed for the plot of the show and they do REALLY entertaining work with some of them!!

For example there’s a French frog (from Assassin’s Creed) who’s really hilarious and Rayman from the Rayman games is a TV host who’s addicted to crack (no joke)

It helped sell a lot of these old games too! I don’t know the exact numbers but a lot of these games were or still are really big and expansive franchises so it increased the sales for some of those games positively

I want a season two so bad but there still hasn’t been any news of one 🙁 but it’s one of my favorite shows

But an adaptation I hate would probably have to be the Minecraft movie for very obvious reasons I don’t even think I need to go into detail here

Animation Adaptation

I chose Castlevania for this assignment because its a great example of both “Sell Adapted Property” and “Built-in Audience”, since it takes a classic video game series and turns it into something way deeper and more cinematic. The original games were all about hunting vampires and fighting monsters, but the Netflix show gives the characters real personalities and emotional weight to them. In Symphony of the Night, when Alucard enters Dracula’s Castle, the scene is quiet and ominous. He’s completely alone, surrounded by gothic ruins and facing off against demons with nothing just his sword. The game doesn’t use dialogue or flashy cutscene, instead, it tells the story through atmosphere, music, and gameplay. You feel the weight of being alone in a. massive, cursed place. In comparison, Trevor and Sypha’s battle against the hell demons in Season 3 of Castlevania show is loud, fastpaced, and full of energy. They fight side by side using magic and weapons in a wild, coordinated battle that feels more like a blockbuster action scene. there’s explosions, and constant movement, making the scene feel very urgent.

My favorite adaptation is obviously arcane, the show tops everything I’ve seen. I was not let down in any of the episodes, it’s visually stunning, every frame looks like a painting, the characters are just so real and like it actually surprises me. Also it doesn’t rely on fan service, which it is lowly rare to come by . And there one I really didn’t enjoy was Death Note, they changed the setting, characters, like light became more of a panicky teen than a genius mastermind. Also some of the animation of him was just so like embarrassing, just eh way he was animated. Also the adaptation was totally rushed and failed to capture the tension of the anime.

the art of an adaptation

Jackie Chan Adventures is a special kind of show. A show that relies upon the part of a built-in audience adaptation. I love Jackie Chan, except I’ve never seen any of his live-action work except for that one movie, the Spy Next Door. probably not his most notable work BUT It successfully pulled me into the Jackie Chan craze. I love this man so much, it soon took over my life. could you imagine when I discovered Jackie Chan Adventures? it was animated, it was funny, it has an AWESOME intro. but I digress.

this show was successful and did everything right except for the fact it did not include a lot of Jackie Chan. while it holds his namesake the cartoon character Jackie Chan is not played by Jackie Chan. but I was stupid and couldn’t tell the difference. however what it lacked in actual Jackie Chan It made up with the live section where it would show Jackie do some INCREDIBLE cool martial arts shit and he would answer questions from his audience

People’s views on this were definitely positive, introducing an iconic actor through a medium that younger kids could consume. INCREDIBLE. it did have a brief stint of merchandise that followed along with the show but seeing as I was about ten years too late, I have yet to get my hands on one of the Jackie collectible cards

my favorite card is Dark Jackie where he gets split into two personalities and bodys. Dark Jackie and wimpy Jackie as I call him.

Devil May Cry

Video

Devil May Cry is a video game franchise developed and published by Capcom. its first game was released in 2001 for the playstation 2, and had 2 more games releasing before its first anime adaptation in 2007.

The 2007 anime wasn’t a bit hit with some of the fans while other fans absolutely loved it, gathering a 7/10 in its IMDB page. Many fans just enjoyed seeing a more calmer side of the main character compared to the games.

Earlier this month netflix announced a new Devil May Cry anime

When the show released many fans were excited to watch it, but a lot of them didn’t like it. As it wasn’t even apart of the storyline from the games, but strangely it has a rotten tomatoes rating of 95%. The critics seems to like it more than some fans. its also a great introduction to the video game series in my opinion.

My favorite animated adaptation is the pokemon series, specifically the X and Y series, while my least favorite animated adaptation is the new lion king, Mufasa.

I really like X and Y pokemon series because it was the first ever pokemon related content I had absorbed into my brain. and because i really enjoy the entire franchise as a whole. while with Mufasa, i just don’t enjoy disney turning their movies into live action. I know that they didn’t use actual lions, but they animated the animals with CGI and it doesn’t have that disney charm like their hand drawn movies do.
